The little black dress – This is the definitive wardrobe staple. The ‘LBD’ serves to flatter and lift in more ways than one. The ultimate little black dress is wearable to a dinner party, a lunch date or even an important work meeting. Accessorise to tailor according to the occasion. Of course there is always room for another black dress in a wardrobe – so having a casual and formal version of this classic is a fashion-forward move.

The perfect pair of jeans – Finding the perfect pair of jeans can be a challenge, so here’s a quick few tips. For athletic, slender frames flared and ‘boyfriend’ cuts flatter and add shape and volume. Fading on the thigh area of the denim creates more of a feminine curve. If you are looking for a pair of jeans to slim down your physique opt for higher waist pairs which elongate and create a more streamline silhouette. For more ‘apple’ shapes, a straight leg works best. For tall, slim shapes opt for slightly cut off jeans with a stylish turn-up at the end. Wide legs with a fitted waist are fantastic for creating feminine shape for those with more of a boyish figure.

The crisp white blouse – A white blouse contributes an effortlessly chic touch to any look. Pair it with fitted jeans and flats for a laid-back yet put-together weekend look. Wear with denim shorts to balance the overall style or with a pencil skirt and statement shoes for a glamorous yet professional edge.

The nude coloured court shoe – These elongate legs and flatter any look. They help smarten jeans, and complement any dress or skirt – every colour works with nude.

The plain white T-shirt – A well fitted, high quality white T-shirt will be your go-to garment for years! Wear it with a blazer, tucked into a high waist skirt or trousers, with shorts, with jeans… Endless possibilities! A scoop neck ‘T’ flatters most figures.

The ballet flats – These are the chicest forms of comfortable footwear money can buy! Take Audrey

Hepburn’s lead and invest in a perfect pair of pumps. Black or nude colours work with any outfit. Pumps make a dress cuter and more casual and a pair of jeans more feminine: the only way to dress your feet in both comfort and style.

The black cardigan – A fitted black cardigan has the ability to dress any outfit ‘up.’ The timeless style and effortless elegance of a black cardigan accented with beautiful buttons is undeniable. For more slender shapes, go for a cut off cardigan that finishes just above the waist for a more feminine appeal. Long cardigans serve to elongate a torso, and belted black cardigans accentuate womanly curves. Wear over a white blouse or T-shirt, with jeans or a dress.

Aaaaargh!! David – NO!!! It really depends on colouring. I agree with virtually all your posts but it is not as simple as this. I have trained as a colour consultant and whilst black can look great on some people, as can white, they both absolutely kill me as they would anyone else who has warm skin undertones (more ‘gold’ than pink. If people have very warm skin – eg more ‘yellowy’ than gold, then they suit black and white too, but even that is way too simple. Some people are more clear than muted and vice versa, some are deep, whereas others are light or mid in colouring. And then there’s the personality to consider; are they Dramatic/Ingenue/Gamine/Natural etc, are they better wearing contrast or blends, texture or smooth. Soory – but this is not as simple as most people think!! If I wore all those things you recommended I would look awful!! (apart from the jeans – but even then, you would still have to choose carefully – Classics need a very particular cut of jeans, for example) And don’t even get me started on body shape…..

Here’s one for you Liz – what kind of outfit would you recommend for me once I have reached my goal? Something for a nice evening out with my girlfriend…
