Day 330 – 350 – Injury Strikes!

I have been pushing myself hard in the gym and have remained focus on continuing to lose weight and finish the job I started nearly a year ago. I pushed myself too hard though and ended up in a MRI machine! Over the last few weeks I have been getting stronger and stronger, my confidence is growing and I can really notice the change in my body. Thursday is my scheduled leg day and with all the weight that I have had to carry over the years I would definitely say it is the most rewarding session as I can lift a lot more in comparison say with my arms. I usually start off with some squats and have been pushing up the weight over the weeks. I started off with a warm up then went into some squats, on my second rep I felt something go ping in my back, when I went to do a third I really struggled. I stopped to assess the damage, I was hurting but felt as though I could continue with exercises that didn’t put a load on my back. I went through the rest of my routine and by the time that I had finished the walk back to the office I was in agony. I was hoping that I had torn a muscle and that the pain was due to my back muscles spasm to protect the damage. I have had that type of injury before when I was younger playing cricket and although painful for a few days I was quick to recover. However after an afternoon sitting behind a desk my back had seized up and I was struggling to stand. Once I got home and crashed out I couldn’t move! My door bell went and I couldn’t get up, I was in agony and struggled to crawl to the door, I missed the person because I didn’t get there in time. At that point I knew I had done some serious damage…

The next morning was brutal, I couldn’t move so I called my boss and told him I wouldn’t be in. He insisted that I go to the hospital to get checked out and that he would send a driver to pick me up. I was in so much pain and needed help moving, Raushana was an absolute god send and helped to get me ready for the hospital. I couldn’t stand up straight and started to use a mop minus the head to help me crawl downstairs to the driver and into the car! I looked like a right wally! By the time we got to the hospital I was ready for some really strong drugs to help with the pain! I managed to get an appointment with the doctor who took one look at me trying to get onto the bed to be examined and told me to go and get an MRI scan. Now this is the first time that I have been for an MRI scan and it was a tight squeeze! I have no idea how I would have managed to get inside a year ago! I went into the tunnel and relaxed for 20 minutes whilst the machine did its thing, I was glad to get out of there as it was a little bit suffocating. After an hour or so the read outs were ready and I went back to the Doctor to analyze the results. I had slipped a disk in my lower back, it was only out by a cm or so and the Doctor said that it would pop back into place with some rest and muscle relaxers but most importantly that I wouldn’t need an operation. This was of great relief as the last thing I need at 30 years of age is to have an operation on my back!

The problem with being injured and unable to train is that you have to be so strict with your eating as there is no chance to burn it off. I spent the first week injured still in considerable pain so there was no chance of me going to the gym. I have to admit that I was feeling pretty low. Work is still very stressful and the gym has been my outlet, without having this it has been really tough to stay motivated. But I have persevered and accepted the fact that things were going to be a little slow over the next few weeks. The second week of being injured was a little easier, at the back end of the week I went to the gym but restricted my exercises so that there would be no pressure on my back, the first two days were ok but by the third day of training in a row my back was stiff and sore and I thought it would be best to rest over the weekend. By Monday I was feeling refreshed and ready to hit the gym full time again! This was a massive relief, I am going to continue to be careful and not put pressure on my back and change my routine slightly but at least I am back in the routine and pushing on towards my goal of being at my ideal weight for Christmas!

    Train your core.
    A strong core and good form when lifting will prevent this.
    Have you tried pilates, they teach you to brace your core properly which protects your back when lifting.
    The other thing, I learned when on my Core training course is that to help prevent this sort of injury you have to train your core in a balanced way. Most people neglect the back portion of the core muscles and focus on the abs.
    I really recommend pilates it complements lifting really well :-)

    Glad you are being cautious! Hope your back strengthens up soon for you. You are looking great! What a difference from your before pictures!
