Day 232 – 238 – A Week of Recovery

unnamedThis past week has been really tough mentally, my injured hip won’t recover so I decided to have an extended period of rest, with less than 8 weeks to go until the marathon it eats into valuable mileage and makes the task of completing in under 5 hours more and more of a challenge. I realize though that resting now and nursing my injury is going to give me a better chance of completing the marathon and really I should be focusing on that rather than a specific time to achieve.
wedding-2As long as I finish I will have completed my goal, I know that I am capable of a half marathon and I know that the excitement, adrenaline and crowd will give me another 6 miles on the day, so 20 has to be the magic number before the big day, and I’m not that far off so I should reduce the pressure on myself and look back at how far I have come in the last 7 months.

wedding-3I was invited to a wedding this weekend which meant that I had to be prepared to resist lots of alcohol and unhealthy food, I adopted my usual tactic of making sure I ate well before the event and stuck to salads, fruit and sparkling water! It may be plain and boring but it keeps me on track, there is such a short time to go to the marathon that I need to remain strong and focused which is all the motivation that I need. Sitting next to an overweight person that got extremely drunk and made a fool of themselves reassured me that I made the right decision to change my lifestyle and improve myself as a person. I will never return to that, I am determined to make this change permanent and seeing things like that only spurs me on more because what I am doing is the right thing for me. I want to attain

the feeling of success and through my continued hard work and determination I am getting closer and closer to achieving that.

spaI spent some time at a local spa trying to get some well needed rest and relaxation. I booked a deep tissue massage which I thought would be great for tired, sore and aching muscles. It turns out that a deep tissue massage is brutally painful! It is certainly an hour of my life that I am not going to forget in a hurry! I have also managed to find a chiropractor so will go for treatment next week to make sure that everything is ok for me to ramp up my training as I get closer to the big day.

Kazakhstan snowThe weather in Kazakhstan is still brutal and sub-zero, I continue to train inside but can’t wait for the spring to get here and for some long runs in the mountains…

    So sorry to hear about your hip. I know all about hip problems after losing weight. I lost 70 lbs back in 1996, and decided to start playing soccer again. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that along with losing weight, I had also lost muscle, especially the small stabilizing muscles that support the joints. The stabilizing muscles are usually the first to go, because they don’t get used as much as the larger muscles when you’re overweight. I ended out tearing the hip flexors in both legs. (Unlike you, I didn’t know when to stop and rest.) Then, a friend showed me some rehabilitative exercises that I could be doing while the torn muscles healed. They were mostly balancing exercises. They looked so easy, but to my surprise, I couldn’t do them at first. It was frustrating, because I knew that I should have been able to do them, after all, I was playing soccer, right? By the time I my hips healed, though, I could stand on a basketball, balancing, and raise one leg. I don’t have any problems with them anymore. Maybe there’s a physical therapist who could show you some things that might help your hip.

    What an Inspiring site, I lost 3 stone at the end of ’12 with the help of a magazine but decided to do a couch to 5k to keep the pounds off over the summer hols and found out how great exercising was so entered the VLM 13 but through naivety and no strength work I lost muscle mass and ended up with an injury 3 weeks before event, but I’m back after 7 months off training and rehab and recouping!! Back with a vengeance to VLM14 yay
    I’m up to 13 miles but like you I have a sore hip but otherwise I’m ready
