Day 151 – 154 – Another Great Personal AchievementNovember 25th, 2013 by David
This past week was the last one that had me running and walking as part of my training session. Next week I am due to start running for the duration of the session, for me this is a big milestone as I have not achieved a training session so far that comprised solely of running, however I pushed myself on Saturday and managed to not only run for 20 minutes straight but also post a sub 12 minute mile! Now for me to run 20 minutes straight (regardless of how fast/slow) is an amazing achievement, just 150 days ago I was out of breath just lifting myself off the sofa! To post a sub 12 minute mile was another great achievement, the harder and longer that I train, the better the results and the more progress I make. It really goes to show that if you are focused and determined to succeed and you are prepared to make the sacrifice and put the hard work in that anything is achievable. The thought of running a marathon is daunting but it doesn’t scare me, I know it is going to take everything I have to achieve, but I am willing to put in that effort in order to cross that finish line and attain the feeling of success.
I have been spending a lot of time reading about people’s experiences of running the marathon to get an understanding of the process and to learn from their mistakes. One thing I have learnt in my life is that it is imperative to listen, learn and if possible utilize other’s experiences so that you can implement their lessons to improve your performance and ability to execute. A concern that I have is making sure I fuel myself correctly. I need to get an understanding of how long I need to eat before training, how much water to consume and when I need to have a running gel for an energy and carbohydrate boost. I have found some good advice but in reality I am going to have to find out through trial and error when is the most productive times to fuel myself before, during and after training.
I decided to share my weight loss and lifestyle change journey with my friends on Facebook this week. I haven’t done so previously and I think that this is because it is my battle and I didn’t want to be accountable to anyone else other than myself. Having an audience on a blog of people that you don’t know makes it easier for me to express myself more openly and share my thoughts and struggles. I think that the more progress I make the more confident I am to show my journey. Confidence is such an important factor in any endeavor that you undertake, it takes some time to build up but once you have that confidence you push on to the next level. My goal is getting closer with each day of hard work that I put in, the marathon will be here in no time and I want to be as ready as possible to tackle it head on and cross that finish line!
